Hirshhorn Museum and Sculpture Garden Wayfinding Refresh
Creating a refreshed wayfinding system that matches the museum's brand guide and enhances the visitor experience.
Overview
During my internship at the Hirshhorn, one of the major tasks involved meeting with staff to discuss and brainstorm solutions to wayfinding challenges. One of the main issues was the lack of clear signage to direct visitors to and from the accessible and regular entrances.
Another problem was the outdated and inconsistent designs of the existing signage. I was assigned to create new accessible signage to guide visitors to and from different entrances that aligned with the Hirshhorn's brand guide. In addition, I worked on two maps. One of the maps was to be used in the 2026 museum guide to help visitors understand the new layout of the sculpture garden. The other map was designed for wayfinding and orientation within the outdoor plaza.

Updating Sculpture Garden Map
With the Hirshhorn Museum's remodeled sculpture garden opening at the end of October 2026, I was tasked with updating the museum guide and creating a new isometric map that captured the layout of the remodeled garden. This map is featured in the Museum Guide, which can be picked up at the information kiosk.

New Plaza Map
The Hirshhorn faced a unique problem of having multiple directions for visitors to enter the museum. The plaza could be entered from multiple points so I was asked to create a map that could be tweaked for use in different entrance areas to help orient and greet visitors. These are to be placed in large stands at key entry points.
